Un peu par hasard je suis tombée sur l’onglet Frenotomy de la Standford School of Medicine sur ce sujet. Bien sûr, je ne prétends pas avoir les compétences médicales pour traiter de la pratique de l’information en tant que tel. Toutefois, l’introduction est venue intéresser l’historienne en moi.

This procedure dates back to the 18th century, when it was a rather common practice for midwives to divide the frenulum with a sharp fingernail. Medical authors of that time also began recommending it for infants with breastfeeding difficulties. There is still controversy regarding when frenotomy is indicated, but it seems reasonable that physicians caring for newborns all be skilled in performing this simple procedure. When indicated, frenotomy in the newborn period can quickly improve a « poor latch » on the breast, and prolong the mother’s ability and willingness to breastfeed.

Si ces informations sont fondées, la frénotomie tirerait son origine du 18e siècle. Nous sommes donc bien loin de cette « dernière tendance en allaitement ».

J’ai poursuivi mes recherches et j’ai relevé d’autres sources pour corroborer ces données historiques. En 2000, l’American Medical Association publiait l’article Ankyloglossia-Incidence and Associated Feeding Difficulties.

Neonatal frenotomy as a treatment for ankyloglossia is not new. In the 18th Century, several references, as cited by Marmet et al and Catlin and De Hann recommanded clipping the frenulum in tongue-tied infants to faciliate breastfeeding. Horton reports that it was the practice of midwifes of this period to divide the lingual frenulum of all babies with their fingernails (p.38).

Les sages-femmes de l’époque auraient pratiqué cette incision à la naissance de tous les bébés qui avaient besoin de cette intervention.

Il s’agit à mon avis d’informations suffisamment pertinentes pour interroger le contexte actuel entourant cette pratique qui est loin d’être nouvelle.
